Fact Check: This video of Muslims licking cutlery is NOT related to COVID-19

A video is being shared on social media with a claim that Muslims in Bihar are intentionally putting their saliva on cutlery and utensils to spread Coronavirus.

NewsMobile fact-checked the video and found that it is OLD.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and put it through Reverse Image Search. We found the same video on Vimeo uploaded on July 31, 2018.

As per the description, the video is of the Bohra community. The description also states that in Bohra culture, they believe in ‘not wasting even a single grain of food’ and hence were licking the cutlery.

We also found an article by The Outlook, featuring an image, where people can be seen sitting in a similar fashion, in similar attire, eating from a thali.

 

Even though NewsMobile couldn’t independently verify the origin of the video, it can safely be said that the video is OLD and is not related to COVID-19.
