COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Wednesday morning

There have been more than 7.2 million COVID-19 cases so far across the world and more than 411,177 deaths linked to the disease.

Here are the top 10 global developments this morning:

1. Brazil on Tuesday restored detailed COVID-19 data to its official national website following controversy over the removal of cumulative totals and a ruling by a Supreme Court justice that the full set of information be reinstated, Reuters reported.

2. The World Health Organization has rowed back on comments that asymptomatic transmission of the virus was ‘very rare’ – now saying such transmissions are still a ‘big unknown.

3. US top coronavirus expert Anthony Fauci has warned that the pandemic is far from over – despite many countries easing their restrictions.

4. South Korea’s coronavirus cases spiked to 50 new cases on Wednesday, after two consecutive days of fewer than 40 cases, Yonhap News Agency reported.

5. In France, the Eiffel Tower is set to reopen on 25 June after being shut for more than three months.

6. In England, plans for all children to return to primary schools before the summer break have been dropped.

7. However, Zoos, safari parks and drive-in cinemas will be allowed to reopen in England from 15 June. PM Boris Johnson will make the official announcement on Wednesday.

8. Australia says it recorded no cases of community transmission on Tuesday.

9. Pakistan should implement intermittent lockdowns to counter a surge in infections, the World Health Organization advised.

10. Face masks will remain compulsory in all public spaces even after Spain’s COVID-19 state of emergency ends on 22 June.
