Red Alert Issued In Andhra As Cyclone Asani Changes Track

Date:

New Delhi: Cyclone Asani on Tuesday changed its track and will hit the Andhra Pradesh coast between Kakinada and Vishakhapatnam on Wednesday. A red warning has been issued by IMD in Andhra Pradesh.

According to the prediction of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe Cyclone Asani over West Central and adjoining the southwest Bay of Bengal has moved west-northwestward with a speed of 25 kmph during the past six hours and lay centered over the west-central Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Asani is 310 km southwest of Visakhapatnam.

The prediction further adds that Cyclone Asani is likely to move northwestwards and reach the Kakinada-Visakhapatnam coast by 11th May.

Sanjeev Diwedi, a scientist at IMD said that “Asani is moving towards the Andhra coast. A red alert has been issued for Andhra. It is expected to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal close to Kakinada or Vishakhapatnam by morning.”

The report also predicts that Cyclone Asani is very likely to recurve slowly north-northwestwards, move along the Andhra Pradesh coast and then emerge into the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the North Andhra and Odisha coast. It is likely to weaken gradually
into a cyclonic storm by the 11th May morning and into a depression by the 12th May morning.

IMD scientist Sanjeev Diwedi further added that “Heavy to very heavy rainfall over Odisha is expected.”
