Fact Check: SRK’s 2014 Speech Clip at KIFF Opening Ceremony Erroneously Spread as 2022 Edition

Date:

The Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is underway. The 28th edition of the event started on December 15, 2022 will close on December 22, 2022. Many national and international celebrities attended the opening ceremony of the event in presence of the West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee.

Against this backdrop, a viral video showing the Bollywood star, Shah Rukh Khan, addressing the ceremony, is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the video, claiming it to be Khan’s address during this year’s event.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: ২৮তম আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা চলচ্চিত্র উৎসব, নেতাজি ইন্ডোরে উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান, বক্তব্য রাখছেন বলিউড বাদশা শাহরুখ খান। (English translation: 28th International Kolkata Film Festival, Opening Ceremony at Netaji Indore, Bollywood King Shahrukh Khan addressing.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Searching for Khan’s opening speech at the event, we identified a YouTube live stream of the opening ceremony of the event on the official channel of the Kolkata International Film Festival. Khan’s speech starts at around 2:24:26 in the video.

We found the speech given by SRK on other YouTube channels (ABP Ananda, News 18 Bangla, and DD Bangla News) does not match the viral clip, including the guests, indicating that the viral clip is not from the ongoing KIFF.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the viral clip, we traced another YouTube video on the official channel of the 21st Kolkata International Film Festival, dated November 14, 2014 and titled: SRK’s speech on 20th KIFF Inauguration Day!

The speech in the video matches the viral clip, informing that the latter is from the 20th edition of the festival held in 2014. We found similar clips on other YouTube channels like ABP Ananda, Kolkata Today, and a few other unverified channels.

According to a news article, titled The Bachchans and SRK come together at KIFF, published on November 11, 2014, on the entertainment section of The Times of India: The opening ceremony of the event was attended by SRK, along with the Bachchan family (Amitabh, Jaya, Abhishek, and Aishwarya Rai). He even greets the Bachchan family in his speech in the viral clip, whereas in the recent edition of KIFF, only Amitabh and Jaya were present.

Therefore, the viral video’s claim is false.
