Fact Check: Are Children In Gaza Digging Through the Debris In Search Of Food? Here’s The Truth

Date:

Amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine war, a video showing children digging through the debris in search of food is widely shared on social media.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Children in Gaza dig up burnt food after Israel bombing. Because of Israel’s decision to totally deprive Gaza of food, water, fuel and electricity.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

Fact Check

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be False.

Going through the viral clip closely, the NM team spotted the watermark of a TikTok account “@moumentaleb” at the bottom right corner.

The social media app, TikTok, carries the same video uploaded on July 21, 2023, months before the recent Israel-Palestine war began, with a caption: “Fire in a relief camp in Hanim Al Minya”.

Conducting a search for incidents of fires at Syrian relief camps in July 2023, our team traced a report in Middle East Monitor, dated July 21. According to the report, a significant fire occurred at a Syrian refugee camp in Hanin, Lebanon. Thankfully, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Also, a video report by Al Jazeera Mubasher, dated July 21, 2023, with an Arabic title (English version): “Our whole division is gone, I lost everything…. A fire devours a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon”. The video, featuring interviews with camp individuals, explains that an electrical short circuit caused the fire.

Thus, it is confirmed that an old video from Syria is falsely linked to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
