China’s BYD Overtakes Tesla As Biggest Electric Vehicle Maker

Date:

New Delhi: Chinese automaker BYD emerged as the leading electric vehicle seller worldwide in the closing quarter of 2023. Surpassing Elon Musk’s Tesla, BYD sold 526,409 electric vehicles, eclipsing Tesla’s 494,989 sales in the October-to-December period.

However, Tesla maintained its lead for the entirety of 2023 in total EV sales, outpacing BYD throughout the year. The US automaker sold 1.8 million vehicles, while BYD managed to sell just about 1.6 million vehicles.

Originally founded in 1995 as a battery producer, BYD later focused on creating all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars. The company sells cars priced around 100,000 yuan (US$14,013) and is controlled by billionaire Wang Chuanfu.
