FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

The NM team found the authenticity of the viral image claiming to show Mumtaz is questionable due to its photographic nature and the absence of cameras during the Mughal period. The image was found on the website of Britain’s Royal Collection Trust through a Reverse Image Search. As per its description, the woman in the viral picture is claimed to be Sultan Shah Jahan Begum — the Begum of Bhopal. The image is from 1875, when Prince of Wales Albert Edward visited undivided India, covering 21 places in present-day India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The same image is also found on the stock photo website Alamy

According to the official website of Indian Culture, Shah Jahan Begum was born on July 29, 1838, and became the Sultan of Bhopal by the then-British government on April 11, 1845.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the woman in the viral image is NOT Mumtaz as claimed, but Begum of Bhopal.
