Fact Check: AI-Generated Image Falsely Shared As Lord Shiva’s Portrait At BARC

Date:

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is India’s primary nuclear research organisation under the Ministry of Atomic Energy, Government of India, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. BARC conducts various research projects, including electricity generation, primarily using nuclear energy. Recently, a post has gone viral on social media featuring an image of a new building adorned with a portrait of Lord Shiva, claimed to be the newly constructed building of BARC.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ভাবা এ্যটমিক রিসার্চ সেন্টারের” নতুন ভবন। “হর হর মহাদেব” (English translation: Bhabha Atomic Research Centre’s new building. Har har Mahadev)

Here’s the link to the viral post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

With a keyword search, we could not find any reliable news reports or information regarding this claim. Had there been a construction project for a new building at BARC featuring a portrait of Lord Shiva, it would have certainly attracted major news outlets for publication.

Even the official website and social media channels of the BARC and the Ministry of Atomic Energy have not carried any information about this building or the picture.

With further verification of software tools, like AI or Not and AI Image Detector, it was found that the image was indeed AI-generated.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral image is AI-generated.
