Do you have any retirement plan? Have you ever discussed with your better half and planned your old age? If no, then consider the latest Global AgeWatch Index from HelpAge International before planning which country you want to live in.

Research:

Researcher Asghar Zaidi, of the Centre for Research on Ageing at the University of Southampton, who led the development of the Index, working alongside HelpAge International, said that this Index is vital in representing the lives of older people in countries around the world as it enables people to compare not just their pension income and health, but also the age friendly environments in which they live.

Ranking:

India is ranked among the world’s worst place to grow old. 116.6 million people over 60 are living, ranks a dismal 71st among 96 countries when it comes to social and economic wellbeing of older people.
Switzerland is the best place in the world to live for those aged 60 and over followed by Norway and Sweden.
Canada stood at fifth, followed by Netherlands, Iceland, Japan, US, UK and Denmark.
Afghanistan (96) is ranked last.

How it evaluated?

The Global AgeWatch Index assesses the social and economic well being of the older population in 96 countries around the world. The Index represents 91 percent of the world’s population aged 60 and over, amounting to some 901 million people. It measures the lives of older people in four key areas: income; health; education and employment and the enabling environment.
