Catalan parliament kicks off secession from Spain after vote

Catalonia’s regional parliament officially kicked off an 18-month process towards secession from Spain Monday in its latest showdown with Madrid.

All 72 separatist lawmakers — the majority in the northeastern region’s parliament — voted for a resolution aimed at creating an independent republic by 2017.
