UN Chief arrives in India for Vibrant Gujarat Summit

New Delhi: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in India on Saturday to hold talks with the country’s top leadership and participate in the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Gandhinagar.

Ban, who is on a four day visit, was accompanied by his wife Yoo Soon-taek and a team of officials. 

The Secretary-General and his delegation will leave for Gandhinagar on Saturday evening where he will deliver a keynote speech at the Inaugural Session of the 7th Vibrant Gujarat Summit on January 11.

Ban will meet President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar among others during the visit, his fourth to India as the UN Secretary-General.

He will be the keynote speaker at the Seventh Vibrant Gujarat Summit which begins on Sunday, and will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the summit. 

Ban will tour the Sabarmati Ashram and inaugurate a 10 MW canal-top solar power plant in Vadodara. 

The solar power plant in Vadodara’s Sama area is a showcase project set up by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. 

He will also deliver the 13th Sapru House Lecture on “India and the United Nations in a Changing World” at the Indian Council of World Affairs on January 12 in New Delhi.

Earlier, Ban also expressed concern over the dispute between New Delhi and Rome over the marines issue and called on the two nations to reach a “mutually acceptable solution.” 

He would conclude his visit to India on 13 January, following his meetings with UN staff and heads of UN agencies working in India.
