Delhi govt orders restarting registration of diesel vehicles

of 2000 cc and above New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) The Delhi government has orderedrestarting registration of diesel cars and SUVs with enginecapacity of 2000 cc and above on payment of one per cent ofthe ex-showroom price of such vehicles as green cess. The move comes after the Supreme Court on August 12 liftedits order banning registration of diesel cars and sport utilityvehicles (SUV) of 2000 cc capacity and above upon one per centof the cost of the vehicle deposited with Central PollutionControl Board by the vehicle manufacturers, dealers orsub-dealers. In an order issued last week, the Transport Department ofDelhi government directed all Regional Transport Officers toregister these vehicles in the capital. "All the registering authorities/motor licensing officer(MLOs) are directed to register diesel cars/SUVs of 2000 cccapacity and above upon production of the proof of the depositof one per cent of the ex-show room price towards EnvironmentProtection Charge with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB),"the order said. With the transport department’s order, Mercedes Benz,Toyota, BMW, Audi and other makers of high-end cars and SUVswill be able to sell their vehicles having engine capacity of2000 cc and above. A senior government official said the purchaser has togive one per cent of the cost of the vehicle as EnvironmentProtection Charge to dealers who will be required to depositthis amount with CPCB for pollution mitigation efforts. In August this year, the apex court had vacated theembargo on registration of such vehicles after taking on recordthe affidavits of Mercedes, Toyota and its dealers as well asthat of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)offering to deposit one per cent of the price of the vehiclesas EPC before the registration.
