Pak envoy briefs UN High Commissioner on Kashmir

From Sajjad Hussain Islamabad, Sep 11 (PTI) Pakistan today said that itsspecial envoy on Kashmir met UN High Commissioner for HumanRights in Geneva and briefed him over the alleged human rightsviolations on the Indian side of the restive state. Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Special Envoy of thePrime Minister on Jammu & Kashmir and Chairman StandingCommittee of National Assembly on Foreign Affairs met PrinceZeid Ra’ad Al Hussein as part of Pakistan’s efforts tohighlight the issue of Kashmir. Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement that Legharibriefed UN High Commissioner "about the ongoing critical humanrights situation in Kashmir, underscoring that the matter wasof great concern to all Pakistanis." It said that High Commissioner Zeid thanked the SpecialEnvoy for his visit to Geneva and for briefing him on "thehuman rights situation." "He assured the Special Envoy that his office wascarefully observing the situation in the area and was incontact with both India and Pakistan in this regard," theForeign Office said. The envoy asked the High Commissioner to take concretemeasures to immediately end violence in Kashmir. The envoy said that India should fulfil its human rightscommitments under the UNSC resolutions and international humanrights obligations. Leghari is one of 22 envoys appointed by Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif to brief the international community about thesituation in Kashmir. PTI SH UZM SKUZM
