Varanasi: Varanasi’s star campaigner who is stealing the limelight is not Narendra Modi or Arvind Kegriwal, but a differently-abled Munna Ram Meena.
Munna is the campaigner of Kejriwal’s troupe in Benaras. “He is our inspiration. Just look at him. Despite being specially abled, he works more than us,” said AAP co-ordinator Amit.
A resident of Sikaar district of Rajasthan, Munna was a disillusioned man, who tried to convince both BJP and Congress governments to avail schemes for disabled persons but failed. When anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare started his hunger strike at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, he joined it.
“I want to stop corruption. I don’t want others to suffer as I did, so I want a reliable leader,” Munna said.
When he heard Kejriwal is contesting from Varanasi, he came all the way from Rajasthan, borrowing Rs 200 from his mother. Â
Munna had no address, no contacts in the city; he didn’t even know where the AAP office was. But he landed at the right place, braving the summer heat to campaign for Kejriwal.
