Exonerated Rogers to make Liege comeback

Date:

Australian Michael Rogers will make his return to competitive racing at Sunday’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege race after having his provisional doping ban lifted by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

On Wednesday, the UCI lifted their suspension against Rogers after accepting he did not intentionally take the banned stimulant clenbuterol.

The 34-year-old had tested positive for clenbuterol in his urine sample at the Japan Cup last October.

Although the UCI stripped him of his victory in that race, they accepted his claim that the clenbuterol entered his system through contaminated meat he had eaten in China.

His Tinkoff-Saxo said Friday he would be part of their Liege team.

“His presence will be essential in the coming weeks,” said sporting director Philippe Mauduit.

“In Liege, the aim will be to help Roman (Kreuziger) try to win the race.”

Rogers is a three-time track cycling world champion who finished second to Bradley Wiggins at the prestigious Criterium du Dauphine in 2012.
