The 6.4 magnitude earthquake, on Sunday, that triggered landslides around Mount Rinjani, left more than 500 hikers stranded on the island of Lombok. Most of the hikers were rescued on Tuesday, ending their two-day ordeal.
At least 16 people were killed and more than 330 were injured due to the earthquake. Indonesia, a nation made up of thousands of volcanic islands, is prone to earthquakes as it lies on tectonic plates that circle virtually the entire Pacific Rim. The volcano, which rises 3,726m (12,224ft) above sea level and is the second-highest, garners sightseers’ attention.

According to the BBC, most of the hikers and guides were able to walk down after a safe route was found by rescue workers but some were flown out by helicopter. Meanwhile, rescue workers are still waiting to bring down the body of an Indonesian hiker and Malaysian tourist who was killed by falling rocks.
So far hundreds of people in Lombok have been left homeless and are staying in temporary camps amid continuing aftershocks.
