Women Power: Indian Navy will now enroll women as sailors

The Ministry of Defence, in a major breakthrough, has deliberated on the enrolment of women as sailors in the Indian Navy during a three-day conference that ended on Friday.

While addressing the Naval Commanders on Friday, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked the top-brass of the Indian Navy to give more impetus to enrollment of women in the Navy.

At present, women are deployed in different branches of the Navy but not sent to sea.

Navy’s Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba confirmed that enrollment of women in the sailor rank was one of the agendas in the conference, the sources said.

The Defence Minister appreciated Navy’s efforts in the area self-reliance and support to the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government and Navy’s initiatives to achieve ‘Digital Navy’ vision in line with the Government’s initiative of ‘Digital India Programme’.
