Cabinet proposes amendments in Aadhaar law; to make it optional for banking and phone

Date:

New Delhi: Months after the Supreme Court’s ruling on the use of Aadhaar, the centre will present a bill in the parliament to amend norms.

The apex court in September struck down a section in the Aadhaar law that allowed private companies to demand customers’ 12-digit unique identification number.

According to reports, the proposed change in the law will allow banks and phone companies to link Aadhaar number with bank accounts and mobile phone numbers. Meanwhile, the second provision will allow a minor who has been enrolled for Aadhaar through his/her parents will have an option to opt out of the Aadhaar database after attaining the age of 18 years.

The proposed law will also give the right to the customers to remove their Aadhaar number from the database of their respective banks and telecom operators.

The Supreme Court had ruled that the law should have only dealt with matters relating to subsidies and welfare schemes and struck down the section that empowered “body, corporate or person” or private entity to demand an Aadhaar number.

Meanwhile, the centre has also proposed a maximum jail term of 10 years for attempt to hack Aadhaar data which is currently 3 years.
