As Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu released the list of the 98 cities which would benefit under the Smart City mission, he said 13 crore population across these 98 cities, which is 35% of urban population will be covered.
This work, which started a year back, has finally reached a stage where the names of the cities were revealed.
While there was a huge buzz on the cities that would be included, there was some disappointment for 9 capital cities like Itanagar, Patna, Shimla, Bengaluru and Kolkata, which did not get nominated.
When asked about how long it would take for these cities to become ‘smart’, he said that smart cities cannot be constructed overnight.
The Smart City mission is viewed as the government’s big push for urban renewal in almost 100 Indian cities and towns. While launching it in June this year, PM Modi had said “Urban planning should begin at the bottom.”
