Cannes’ Palme d’Or won by Swedish film “The Square”

Date:

The annual Cannes film festival wrapped on Sunday with Swedish film “The Square” securing the coveted Palme d’Or.

The movie, directed by Ruben Ostlund, tells the story of a museum curator and takes a satirical look at the art community. Spanish filmmaker, Pedro Almodovar, head of the nine-person jury, said that the film highlighted “the dictatorship of being politically correct.”

The Cannes jury, which also included Hollywood stars Will Smith and Jessica Chastain on its panel, awarded Sofia Coppola the Best Director award for “The Beguiled,” which stars Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman in a period drama set during the American Civil War.

Diane Kruger’s performance as woman putting her life back together after losing her family in “In the Fade,” earned the German actress the Best Actress award. Joaquin Phoenix earned the Best Actor award for his performance in “You Were Never Really Here,” in which he plays a psychologically damaged hitman.

The Cannes film festival also saw Netflix enter two movies in the competition. However, since the movies were not going to be released in theatres, the Cannes jury decided against nominating either of the movies for the Palme d’Or.
