India loses to South Africa by 72 runs in the opening test match

Date:

South African bowlers dominated the second session of the fourth day of the opening Test between India and South Africa at Cape Town. South Africa, after being bowled-out for 130 in their second innings, put India on the mat with their high-quality bowling display. At the start of the second innings, India needed 208 runs to win.

Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay took India off to a decent start but were put on the back foot, courtesy some brilliant bowling display from the Proteas. The hosts picked up wickets at regular intervals to leave the visitors in tatters. Vernon Philander took three wickets, while Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada took two wickets apiece. At tea, South Africa need three wickets to win, while India need 126 runs to win.

The second session of the 4th Test was no different from the first session as 7 Indian wickets tumbled. Needing 208 runs to win India are 82/7 and still require 126 runs to win the game while South Africa need 4 wickets.

After Indian bowlers bowled brilliantly in the first session, it seemed like a total lesser (by 1 run) than their first innings should be chased and the momentum was with the visitors as well. A Steyn-less bowling unit was expected to bother India but it looked like 208 was still chasable.

Match Ends: South Africa beat India by 72 runs as Philander picks the last wicket of the Indian innings. Bumrah edged the ball into the hands of Du Plessis as it was replay of Shami’s wicket. Philander ends innings with marvelous figures of 6/42.
