Coutinho’s Barca debut settled by Messi’s fantabulous free kick

Date:

A superb free kick from Lionel Messi sealed the game for Barcelona, which had to come from behind, against Alaves and match their 21-match unbeaten run from the 2009-10 season under Pep Guardiola.

It was a game where former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho made an unforgettable debut to his Barcelona career but his former teammate Luis Suarez and Messi scored for the Catalans late as they won the game 2-1.

Ernesto Valverde’s side weren’t at their fluent best in the first half and were made to pay when John Guidetti fired the Babazorros in front midway through the first half.

But the La Liga leaders lifted their game in the second half and hit back through Luis Suarez before Lionel Messi completed the comeback win at the death.

A first-half strike from John Guidetti put Barca’s unbeaten record in jeopardy at the Camp Nou on Sunday, but Luis Suarez pulled his side level in the 72nd minute before a Lionel Messi free-kick gave the Catalans a 2-1 victory.

Barca now have 18 wins and three draws in La Liga, while they managed 17 victories and four draws to open the 2009-10 campaign.
