Apple plans to strengthen privacy controls around Full Disk Access on Mac computers amid concerns that increasingly capable AI agent apps could access sensitive user data.
The company said it will introduce clearer prompts requiring users to take an explicit action before granting third-party applications access to sensitive system information.
Full Disk Access can allow software to access files, messages, mail and browsing data, and was originally intended largely for functions such as backups and system utilities.
Apple said some developers are using the permission in ways that could expose users’ information without their full understanding.
It also warned that access granted to communication apps could compromise the privacy of people communicating with the user.
AI Agents Raise Privacy Concerns
Apple said the risks are likely to increase as AI agents become more capable and autonomous. These tools can perform tasks on a user’s behalf but may require broad permissions to function.
Meta’s Muse has recently surpassed 5 million downloads, while OpenAI said more than 35 million people use its agent tools, including ChatGPT Work and Codex, up from 10 million in July.
In August, OpenAI introduced an opt-in feature allowing its ChatGPT Mac app to read, summarise, write and send messages through Apple’s Messages app, requiring Full Disk Access.
Apple said the new controls are intended to help users make informed decisions about their data and privacy.
The move comes as Apple continues expanding its ecosystem in India, where UPI accounts for more than 80% of digital payment volume.
