OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing sponsored messages to logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans. More than 50 brands are expected to advertise in the country this week, with WPP and Omnicom serving as the company’s initial, non-exclusive agency partners.
Ads will appear below ChatGPT responses when relevant sponsored products or services are available. OpenAI said they will be clearly labelled and visually separated from AI-generated answers, adding that advertising will not influence ChatGPT’s responses.
From September 4, businesses will be able to use OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager in India, with daily budgets starting at Rs. 725. The company has also introduced cost-per-click bidding and additional campaign measurement tools.
All You Need to Know
OpenAI said advertisers will not have access to users’ conversations, chat history, memories or personal details and that user data will not be sold to advertisers. Businesses will instead receive aggregated campaign data, such as impressions and clicks.
Users can dismiss ads, provide feedback, manage ad personalisation and clear data used for advertising. Ads will not be shown to accounts belonging to or predicted to belong to people under 18, or alongside sensitive topics such as politics and mental health.
ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users will continue to use the service without ads.
OpenAI said weekly active users in India have doubled year-on-year as the country becomes a major market for ChatGPT.
