OpenAI is reportedly working on its first consumer hardware device, a portable screen-free smart speaker designed to act as an AI-powered home companion.
The device is expected to bring ChatGPT into a physical form with advanced conversational abilities and personalised interactions.
According to reports, the AI device will run on a rechargeable battery, allowing users to move it around their homes. Unlike traditional smart speakers, it is being developed as a “human-like AI companion” that can learn user preferences over time and provide more personalised assistance.
The device is expected to be powered by GPT-Live, an advanced version of ChatGPT’s voice capabilities that can listen, speak and process information in real time. It may support tasks such as controlling smart home devices, playing music, responding to messages and offering daily assistance.
A unique feature could be mechanical components that allow subtle movements during conversations, creating a more lifelike experience. The device is also expected to include a built-in camera and sensors for better contextual understanding.
The project reportedly involves former Apple engineers and represents OpenAI’s move beyond software into AI-focused hardware.
However, the company’s plans come amid a legal dispute with Apple, which has accused OpenAI of benefiting from alleged trade secret theft by a former employee. OpenAI has denied the allegations.
