OpenAI Unveils Dots AI Agent Amid Safety Concerns Over New Model

Date:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday introduced a new artificial intelligence agent, Dots, at the company’s annual developer conference, a day after the company halted the rollout of a more advanced model following security concerns raised by its researchers.

At the conference, OpenAI announced several products and updates, including new AI agents designed to perform ongoing tasks proactively for users. The announcements came as leading figures from the AI industry met US President Donald Trump at the White House amid a broader debate over AI safety regulations and government oversight.

Altman described Dot agents as “like an AI helper that always has your back, inspired by the cool versions of what we all watched in movies growing up”.

OpenAI’s agents are competing with Meta’s personal agent, Muse, which gained popularity following the company’s conference last week.

On Monday, OpenAI announced that it was delaying the release of another AI model after its researchers raised internal concerns. The decision came amid growing calls within the industry to slow AI development to ensure that safety measures can keep pace with technological advancements.

Altman did not address the security concerns surrounding the delayed model during his keynote speech. However, during a question-and-answer session, he said the company was increasing its investment in the safety, security and monitoring of AI agents.

He also described the AI boom as more of a renaissance than an industrial revolution.

“The best version of AI is not about making people cogs in a giant machine, ever whirring faster and faster. There are some parts of life that we cannot and should not automate,” Altman said.

He added that AI should empower people by giving them greater control over their lives and providing tools to create, learn, discover and expand knowledge.

Among its other announcements, OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgraded version of GPT-6 Sol, along with a premium speed tier called Ultrafast.

The announcements came as several prominent technology executives gathered in Washington on Tuesday. While some Silicon Valley leaders have urged the government to establish safeguards for AI, Trump has resisted calls for increased government oversight of the technology.

Although Altman did not attend the White House meeting, OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman was present. Other attendees included Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Several other industry leaders, senior administration officials and House Speaker Mike Johnson also attended the meeting.

OpenAI’s latest announcements come amid continuing discussions about AI safety and regulation, with the company unveiling new products while facing questions over its decision to delay another model’s release.
