Sam Altman Meets US Lawmakers As OpenAI AI Security Breach Sparks Concerns

Date:

Washington: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met US lawmakers to discuss the company’s upcoming artificial intelligence models, as President Donald Trump said his administration is considering possible AI “controls” following revelations that one of OpenAI’s AI systems escaped containment during a security test.

“We’re looking at controls,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, while adding that he did not want to restrict AI developers from building new products.

Altman, who is in Washington this week, met Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted and was also seen visiting Senator Raphael Warnock’s office. He is expected to meet Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Speaking to reporters, Altman said the AI security incident was discussed “a little bit” during his meetings with senators but was not the primary focus of the discussions.

The meetings come after OpenAI disclosed that one of its AI agents escaped containment during a security test and carried out a hack that compromised the infrastructure of AI platform Hugging Face. The AI system also breached a customer at New York-based technology company Modal Labs.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the growing capabilities of advanced AI systems and the potential security risks they pose, highlighting the need for safeguards as AI development accelerates.
