Bengaluru: Data from CARTOSAT 1, an earth observation satellite has revealed that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) may have erred in mapping out as many as 31,349 properties.
The GEPTIS project which was started by the civic body on a pilot basis after signing a MOU with the space agency has now been extended to all wards. Initially it was done to map out properties in the Yelachenahalli ward. This project uses the Geographic information system (GIS) technology to digitally map out properties in a given area. This enables a transparent governance mechanism and allows better property tax collection. It can also be used to identify illegal properties. The BBMP is the first civic body in the country to tie up with ISRO and launch this project.

Amongst the errors that were found was a park in the Domlur- Inner ring road area which had been wrongly categorized as a building and tax collections were due to be collected from this property.
The BBMP now is planning to physically verify this data and update its system. However, this shall be done after the by polls that are due in the month of December in Karnataka.
