Women wearing Churidars banned from entering Kerala temple

Date:

In what could be a bizarre move, Kerala High Court on Thursday prohibited the entry of women devotees wearing ‘churidars’ inside the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvanthanpuram, making it clear the chief priest’s word is final with regard to temple rites and rituals.

On November 29, a bureaucrat, KN Satheesh, broke with tradition and allowed churidars to be worn. In doing so, he went against the opinion of the temple chairman, K Haripal.

The court’s order came after two petitions challenged Satheesh’s decision making it clear that a bureaucrat has no right to make changes in the tradition.
