After days of relentless heat, a sudden burst of rain, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms brought dramatic relief to Bengaluru—but quickly spiralled into widespread disruption, exposing the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather swings. The abrupt weather shift not only cooled temperatures but also triggered waterlogging, traffic chaos, and tragic incidents across parts of Karnataka.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city experienced its first major spell of rainfall this season on April 29, accompanied by strong winds, lightning, and hail in some areas. While the showers provided long-awaited respite from soaring temperatures, they also caused severe disruptions.

Key stretches such as Silk Board Junction, Outer Ring Road, and Whitefield witnessed heavy waterlogging, leaving commuters stranded for hours as traffic came to a near standstill.
The sudden weather event also turned tragic, with a compound wall collapse at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital claiming seven lives, including two children, highlighting the risks posed by intense storms.
The IMD has now issued a warning for continued unstable weather conditions across Karnataka. While mornings are expected to remain largely dry and sunny, weather activity is likely to intensify in the afternoons with partly cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas. These spells may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and even hailstorms, particularly in south interior Karnataka.
A hailstorm alert has specifically been flagged for April 30 in parts of the region, signalling the possibility of intense localised weather events. Over the next few days, including April 30 and May 1, thunderstorm and lightning activity is expected across coastal, north interior, and south interior Karnataka. Conditions are likely to stabilise slightly from May 2, although isolated rain may continue.
Rainfall data indicates the intensity of the recent spell, with several areas in Bengaluru recording heavy showers. Neighbouring districts such as Mandya, Ramanagara, and Hassan also reported significant rainfall, underlining the widespread impact of the system.
Despite bringing relief from the heatwave, the sudden weather change has disrupted daily life, with uprooted trees, waterlogged streets, and emergency responses across the city. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and stay updated with official advisories as volatile weather conditions persist.
