New Delhi: Rain brought relief from the heat in the national capital on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more showers and thunderstorms across Delhi-NCR over the next five days.
According to IMD, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness cloudy skies with spells of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. Temperatures are likely to remain between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius during this period.
According to the IMD’s district-level nowcast, parts of north Delhi were placed under a red alert, with moderate rain at several locations and heavy rain at isolated places likely, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of up to 70 kmph.
The rest of the national capital was put under an orange alert, with moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph expected in most areas.
The district-wise forecast issued by Urban Meteorological Services for Delhi-NCR on July 7 said weather conditions will remain similar across all 15 districts, including North Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi, North East Delhi, South West Delhi, South East Delhi, Shahdara, and NCR districts Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad.
Similar weather is likely on July 8, while July 9 is expected to witness light to moderate rain at isolated places with thunderstorms and strong winds during the morning or forenoon, followed by another spell of very light to light rain at night.
The warning level will drop to ‘Green – No Warning’ on July 10 and 11, although a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of very light to light rain, thunderstorms and lightning has been forecast. IMD has categorised the probability of rainfall over all five days as “Likely”, defined as 25-50%.
The forecast also covers adjoining NCR regions including Panipat, Meerut, Noida, Faridabad, Rewari, Alwar and Gurugram. Residents have been advised to remain cautious of lightning and gusty winds over the next three days.
Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon advanced further into parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana, with IMD forecasting its spread to the remaining parts of the country over the next two to three days.
The weather department has also warned of extremely heavy rainfall in several states and identified moderate flash flood risks in parts of western India over the next 24 hours.
