New Delhi: Delhi-NCR is set for one of the most active monsoon spells of the season, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the national capital. Widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning are expected over the next 24 hours.
The alert came as fresh rains hit the region on Tuesday morning, July 28, bringing relief from humid conditions. Safdarjung recorded 32.4 mm rainfall by 8:30 am, while the Ridge observatory received 37.6 mm.
The weather system is being driven by a deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which has strengthened the monsoon trough and pushed moisture-laden winds towards northwest India.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay cautious around waterlogged areas, and remain away from weak structures, trees and electric poles during thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane and Palghar.
A green alert has been issued for these areas, with forecasts of cloudy skies, moderate rainfall and gusty winds over the next 24 hours. Isolated parts of Mumbai and Thane may experience intense showers with winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to record temperatures around 31°C maximum and 25°C minimum, with similar weather conditions likely to continue for the next 48 hours. Palghar may witness light to moderate rain and thundershowers.
The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in the Konkan-Goa region and South Madhya Maharashtra’s Ghat areas. An orange alert has been issued for the Ghats of Kolhapur, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Gondia, while a yellow alert is in place for several districts, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nagpur and others.
Mumbai residents may also face a temporary water supply reduction due to BMC maintenance work at the Panjrapur pumping station from July 28 to July 29.
Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.
