The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert predicting rain and thunderstorms in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan. Meanwhile, Delhi is expected to experience some relief from the ongoing heatwave.
According to the IMD, the northern and central parts of India are likely to witness scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The advisory comes as temperatures remain high across much of the region.
“Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are very likely at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan during the next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its bulletin.
The meteorological department also noted that “Delhi is likely to witness partly cloudy skies with a possibility of light rain, offering temporary relief from the heatwave conditions currently prevailing in the national capital.”
The IMD has urged residents in the affected states to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during thunderstorms. Farmers and those working in open fields have also been advised to take precautions against heavy rainfall and lightning.
The forecast comes amid persistent high temperatures across northern India, with some cities recording heatwave-like conditions over the past week. In addition to rainfall, the IMD has warned of strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h in certain areas, which may lead to localised damage to trees and power lines.
“People are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing under trees or structures that may be unsafe during strong winds,” the IMD bulletin added.
The weather alert is expected to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours, with authorities monitoring the situation closely to issue any further warnings if necessary. Residents are advised to stay updated with local forecasts and follow safety instructions issued by officials.
