The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued a nowcast warning predicting light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-50 kmph across Delhi and the NCR region over the next two hours.
According to the Regional Weather Forecast Centre, the weather system is also expected to affect several parts of Haryana, including Fatehabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Sonipat, Jind, Bhiwani and Jhajjar, along with adjoining areas such as Gohana, Hansi, Kharkhoda, Charkhi Dadri, Mahendragarh and Rewari.
Parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Baraut, Baghpat and Khekra, as well as eastern Rajasthan regions such as Bhadra, Pilani and Khairthal, are also likely to witness similar weather activity.
The alert comes days after rain and hailstorms lashed parts of the national capital, bringing relief from intense heat conditions. Areas including Dwarka witnessed hailstorms, while strong winds and thunderstorms were reported across several localities.
The weather office had earlier forecast similar spells of rain and thunderstorms between May 10 and 11, signalling a shift in weather patterns across northwest India over the past week.
In its latest monthly outlook, the IMD predicted above-normal rainfall across the country during May 2026, while temperature trends are expected to vary across regions.
“During May 2026, maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal across many parts of the country,” the IMD said in a statement issued by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
However, the weather agency cautioned that above-normal temperatures are likely over parts of southern peninsular India, sections of the northeast and parts of northwest India.
The IMD also noted evolving global climate indicators, stating that ENSO-neutral conditions over the equatorial Pacific are gradually shifting towards El Nino conditions, which could influence the upcoming southwest monsoon season.
