New Delhi: Large parts of India are set to remain under the influence of an active southwest monsoon on Wednesday, July 8, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across northwest, central, eastern and northeastern states.
Extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while several other states are likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers.
The weather agency has also said conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the north Arabian Sea over the next two to three days, completing its journey across the entire country.
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, parts of Karnataka and Rajasthan on July 8.
Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Vidarbha, Saurashtra and Kutch, and parts of the Northeast are also expected to receive heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also forecast for several regions.
Winds of 50-60 kmph may occur over parts of Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, while gusts of up to 50 kmph are expected in parts of Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Lakshadweep.
The IMD said the southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of Gujarat and additional areas of Rajasthan and Haryana. Conditions remain favourable for it to cover the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the north Arabian Sea over the next two to three days, marking the monsoon’s arrival across the entire country.
The widespread rainfall is being driven by a well-marked low-pressure area persisting over east Madhya Pradesh. The system is expected to move west-northwest slowly over the next 24 hours, while the monsoon trough and other weather systems continue to channel moisture across much of the country, keeping rain activity strong over northern, central and eastern India.
This weather pattern is expected to keep rainfall active through the week. The IMD has forecast widespread showers across large parts of north-west, central and northeastern India over the coming days, with heavy rainfall likely to continue in several states even after July 8.
