Rain Lashes Delhi, IMD Issues Yellow Alert Till Friday

Date:

On Tuesday, parts of Delhi experienced light to moderate rain, causing traffic disruptions across city roads and waterlogging in key areas, especially in the western and northern parts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain for the city, along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30kmph. A yellow alert has been issued until Friday.

Between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Tuesday, Safdarjung, Delhi’s main weather station, registered 5.6mm of rain. In the same time frame, Palam recorded 10.5mm, Lodhi Road saw 1mm, Ridge station received 2mm, and Ayanagar logged 1.8mm. Pitampura witnessed the heaviest downpour with 27mm of rain.

“We have a depression over central India, a western disturbance forming and the monsoon trough. These weather systems will combine and bring adequate moisture for rain over Delhi-NCR in the next two to three days,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet.

The Delhi Traffic Police advised avoiding several areas, including Najafgarh Phirni Road, GT Karnal Road, Dabri roundabout, and parts of the Outer Ring Road from Peeragarhi to Vikaspuri.

Commuters reported that traffic in the southern and southwestern parts of the city also slowed down due to the rain.

As of Tuesday, Delhi has received 79.5mm of rainfall in September, with a possibility of exceeding the 100mm mark in the coming days. The normal rainfall average for September is 123.4mm.

Tuesday’s maximum temperature reached 35.4°C, two degrees above the average, while the minimum was 25.2°C, close to normal. Wednesday’s temperatures are expected to hover around 33°C and 24°C.
