Heavy rainfall, ranging from 12.5 cm to over 20 cm, is forecasted for southern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and coastal Karnataka over the next few days. Meanwhile, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to see scattered showers and thunderstorms this week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand in eastern India are also likely to receive heavy rainfall of 6.45 cm to 20 cm.
IMD Director General M Mohapatra said, “There has been extremely heavy rain in Gujarat. Very heavy rain will continue in the region. East India will also get very heavy rain. Delhi, National Capital Region (NCR), Haryana, and Punjab are expected to record sporadic rain and thundershowers during the week. Rainfall will increase.”
In Tripura, heavy rain has displaced over 65,000 people and caused around two dozen deaths due to floods and landslides. Gujarat has also seen significant flooding in Navsari, prompting evacuations.
A deep depression over east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh is moving west-southwest. It is expected to reach Saurashtra, Kutch, parts of Pakistan, and the northeastern Arabian Sea by August 29 morning.
A well-marked low-pressure area will likely move west-northwest across Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and northern Odisha in the next two days.
Light to moderate rain is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan this week, with scattered showers in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Uttarakhand and east Uttar Pradesh may see isolated heavy rain on Tuesday.
Since June 1, the country has experienced a 5% excess in rainfall. South Peninsular India received 19% more rain, and Central India saw a 13% increase. However, East and Northeast India faced an 11% rainfall deficit, while Northwest India reported no excess rainfall.
