The long-running police procedural The Rookie has officially been renewed for a ninth season, further cementing its place among ABC’s most enduring dramas, according to Deadline. Led by Nathan Fillion and created by Alexi Hawley, the series continues to build on its successful run on the network.
With this renewal, The Rookie becomes one of ABC’s longest-running dramas, trailing only Grey’s Anatomy, which is heading into Season 23, and NYPD Blue, which ran for 12 seasons. It also matches the nine-season runs of Dynasty and The F.B.I.. Meanwhile, 9-1-1 is set to enter its tenth season, though it originally aired on Fox before moving to ABC.
“So far, the mindset across the board is, as Melissa O’Neil said, ‘Let’s Grey’s Anatomy this thing,’” Hawley told Deadline.
He added that the team still feels far from running out of ideas. “Everybody is having a good time. It’s a cast that genuinely enjoys working together and gets to do fun things every day. Heading into Season 9, it doesn’t feel like we’re anywhere near out of story. We’re not a procedural where we need a major incident every week. We can reinvent ourselves, and that keeps things fresh. Bringing in new rookies or characters also shifts the dynamic. I’d happily continue until they turn the lights out.”
Hawley also hinted at a possible franchise expansion, with a new series titled The Rookie: North currently in the pilot stage at ABC.
The show remains one of the network’s steady performers in the procedural space, blending character-driven storytelling with case-of-the-week narratives. This balance has allowed it to evolve over time while staying true to its core premise.
Industry observers often point to The Rookie as a modern network drama that has sustained its run through evolving character arcs and fresh storytelling, rather than relying solely on repetitive episodic formats. Much of its longevity is credited to its flexible structure and strong ensemble cast, whose on-screen chemistry continues to resonate with audiences.
The renewal ensures another season of production, with details on casting and premiere dates expected to be announced closer to the upcoming broadcast cycle. ABC is likely to confirm scheduling in the coming months.
