After the massive critical and commercial success of Manjummal Boys, filmmaker Chidambaram is set to take his next project Balan to the global stage, with the film officially selected for a market screening at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Taking to their Instagram handle, KVN Productions confirmed that the film will be showcased at the Marché du Film during the festival on May 14.
“Taking Balan: The Boy to the world stage. The film will be showcased with a Market Screening at the Marche du Film during the Cannes Film Festival on the 14th May,” wrote KVN Productions.
The announcement marks a significant international milestone for the film, which was first revealed in 2024 following the success of Manjummal Boys, widely regarded as one of the most impactful Malayalam films in recent years.
Balan has been scripted by Jithu Madhavan, known for acclaimed hits Romancham and Aavesham. The film will feature an entirely fresh cast, selected through auditions, continuing the director’s focus on introducing new talent to the industry.
The first-look poster, released earlier, featured a semi-naked boy holding a wooden stick against a floral backdrop, sparking curiosity about the film’s narrative tone and themes. However, the makers have kept the storyline tightly under wraps.
The film is jointly produced by Venkat K Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn under the banners of KVN Productions and Thespian Films. The production team has not yet announced a theatrical release date.
On the technical front, Balan brings together a strong creative team. The music is composed by Sushin Shyam, while cinematography is handled by Shyju Khalid. The film is edited by Vivek Harshan.
With its Cannes market screening, Balan is expected to attract global distributors and further elevate Chidambaram’s reputation as one of Malayalam cinema’s most promising contemporary filmmakers.
