Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has described his upcoming film The Odyssey as a story rooted in the earliest form of superhero storytelling, while also praising actor Tom Holland for his performance.
Speaking about the project, Nolan highlighted the lasting cultural impact of The Odyssey, calling its central figures the “original superheroes” and noting how their journeys continue to influence modern cinema. He emphasised that the epic narrative forms the foundation of many contemporary heroic arcs seen on screen today.
The director explained that the film begins in Ithaca, focusing on Penelope and Telemachus as they await the return of Odysseus following the Trojan War. He noted that the storytelling approach mirrors the layered and non-linear structure of Homer’s original work, offering a faithful yet cinematic retelling of the ancient Greek epic.
Nolan also commended Holland, who takes on the role of Telemachus, speaking highly of the actor’s contribution to the film. He acknowledged Holland’s performance as a key element in bringing emotional depth to the story.
The film is an adaptation of the classic tale attributed to Homer, chronicling the long and perilous journey of Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. Actor Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, joined by a star-studded ensemble including Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson.
With its grand scale and mythological roots, *The Odyssey* is expected to deliver a visually immersive experience while staying true to the themes of heroism, endurance and homecoming that have defined the story for centuries.
The highly anticipated film is slated for release in July 2026, positioning itself as one of Nolan’s most ambitious projects yet, blending classical literature with modern cinematic storytelling.
