Disney has unveiled its next major animated feature, Hexed, spotlighting Hailee Steinfeld and Rashida Jones in leading roles, as the studio continues to expand its original storytelling slate following a string of blockbuster successes. Hexed is an original story centered on a teenage misfit and her highly organized, Type A mother, who discover that the girl’s unusual quirks are actually a form of hidden magic. Their journey takes them into a vibrant magical world where those powers can finally run free, setting the stage for a heartfelt and visually rich adventure. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 25.
Hailee Steinfeld, who earned an Academy Award nomination for True Grit, brings strong animated and live-action credentials to the project, with credits including Pitch Perfect, The Edge of Seventeen and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Rashida Jones, widely known for her roles in Parks and Recreation, I Love You, Man, and The Muppets, joins her in what promises to be a dynamic on-screen pairing.
Behind the camera, Hexed marks the directorial debut of Josie Trinidad, known for her work as head of story on Ralph Breaks the Internet and Zootopia. She will co-direct with Jason Hand, who previously worked on Moana 2 and Encanto. Production duties will be handled by Roy Conli and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones.
Disney enters this new project riding the momentum of Zootopia 2, which reportedly became the highest-grossing animated film of all time with $1.7 billion worldwide, surpassing Inside Out 2 and Frozen 2. The studio also showcased footage from several major upcoming titles at CinemaCon, including Moana, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Toy Story 5 and Avengers: Doomsday, reinforcing its ambitious release pipeline.
