The legacy of the King of Pop is roaring back to life as the final trailer for Michael drops, offering a powerful first look at Jaafar Jackson stepping into the shoes of his legendary uncle, Michael Jackson. Packed with iconic music, striking visuals, and emotional depth, the trailer sets the stage for what could be one of the most talked-about biopics in recent years.
Released by Lionsgate on Wednesday ahead of the film’s April 24 debut, the trailer showcases the 29-year-old Jaafar delivering captivating performances of some of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, including Beat It, Thriller, Billie Jean, and Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough. The film traces the pop icon’s extraordinary rise and enduring influence, while also offering glimpses into his personal struggles and later years leading up to the 2000s.
Jaafar, the son of Jermaine Jackson, makes his acting debut in the film, which is directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for Training Day. His transformation into the global superstar is central to the film, blending performance and storytelling to capture the essence of one of music’s most influential figures, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 50.
Speaking about his experience, Jaafar revealed that he kept his casting a secret from his immediate family for nearly a year. “Going into it I tried my best to say, ‘I’m going to just try to watch without critiquing anything,’ ” he said, laughing while recalling the first time he watched the film.
The movie also boasts a strong supporting cast, including Miles Teller as Michael’s lawyer and manager John Branca, Colman Domingo as his father Joe Jackson, Nia Long as his mother Katherine Jackson, and Kat Graham portraying Motown legend Diana Ross.
Reflecting on his first screening, Jaafar added, “As soon as it came on, it was a completely different experience than what I thought it was going to be. It went by so fast… the second time I saw it was a completely different experience. I was able to understand what the story is and really allow myself to enjoy what’s on the screen,” according to People.
Michael is set to hit theatres worldwide on April 24, bringing the story of a global icon back to the big screen.
