Indian cinema is set for a landmark moment at the Cannes Film Festival as the restored 4K version of Amma Ariyan, the final masterpiece of late filmmaker John Abraham, becomes the only Indian feature selected this year for a world premiere at the prestigious global event.
Presented by the Film Heritage Foundation, the cult Malayalam film — also known as Report to Mother — marks the foundation’s fifth consecutive Cannes showcase of a restored South Asian cinematic classic.
“Set against the political turbulence of 1970s Kerala, it follows Purushan, who sets out to inform a mother of her son’s death, gathering companions along the way in a journey that becomes both personal and political. Blending documentary and fiction through a non-linear narrative, the film unfolds as a letter from a son to his mother- an intimate and expansive meditation on memory, ideology and resistance,” read the official logline.
Widely regarded as one of India’s most radical filmmakers, Abraham rejected commercial storytelling conventions to create politically charged and deeply human cinema. In 2001, the British Film Institute included Amma Ariyan among the ten greatest Indian films of all time.
The restoration effort faced major challenges due to the absence of the original camera negative and the existence of only one surviving unsubtitled print.
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur said, “The selection of Film Heritage Foundation’s restoration of John Abraham’s ‘Amma Ariyan’ for a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival is a strong validation of the work we’ve been doing.”
Lead actor Joy Mathew added, “I’m immensely pleased that John Abraham’s ‘Amma Ariyan’, made over 40 years ago, is being showcased at the Cannes Film Festival this year.”
The film was originally produced by the Odessa Collective, a people-funded cinema movement co-founded by Abraham that travelled across villages raising funds through street performances and screenings.
The Cannes presentation will feature Dungarpur, Joy Mathew, cinematographer Venu and editor Bina Paul.
