Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has come out in support of Deepika Padukone’s much-discussed demand for an eight-hour workday, calling it a right she has “earned” over the years.
The conversation traces back to 2025, when Deepika stepped away from Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, reportedly over concerns about working conditions, including long shooting hours. Her decision sparked a wider discussion on work-life balance in the film industry, especially for women.
Speaking on a podcast with ANI, Kangana dismissed the controversy as unnecessary, emphasising that Deepika’s stature in the industry allows her to set such boundaries. She pointed out that the actor, now a mother, has reached a stage where filmmakers are willing to accommodate her schedule rather than replace her.
Reflecting on their earlier years, Kangana recalled a time when both actors pushed themselves to work 12 to 14-hour shifts to establish their careers. She noted that such intensity often defines the early phase of an actor’s journey, where opportunities are limited and competition is high. However, she added that priorities evolve with time, especially with personal responsibilities.
Kangana also highlighted the gendered expectations within the industry, arguing that expecting women to juggle long work hours alongside family responsibilities is unrealistic. According to her, actors like Deepika, who have achieved significant success, are in a position to demand healthier working conditions without compromising their professional standing.
Deepika, for her part, had earlier addressed the backlash, calling out the double standards faced by women. She noted that many male superstars have worked shorter shifts for years without attracting similar scrutiny, questioning why her request was being viewed differently.
Despite the controversy, Deepika’s professional slate remains strong. She is set to reunite with Shah Rukh Khan in Siddharth Anand’s upcoming film King and will also star alongside Allu Arjun in Raaka.
