Set in 1893 during the late Victorian period of British colonial rule in India, ‘Lagaan’ tells the story of villagers in Central India struggling under the burden of high taxes and years of drought. Their lives take a dramatic turn when an arrogant British Indian Army officer challenges them to a game of cricket, offering tax relief if they win.
Faced with the difficult task of learning a sport unfamiliar to them, the villagers unite and prepare for a match that will determine their future.
Over the years, ‘Lagaan’ has earned widespread acclaim both in India and internationally. The film was screened at numerous international film festivals and received several honours.
At the 49th National Film Awards, ‘Lagaan’ won eight awards, including Best Popular Film, further cementing its place as one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated productions.
