Maggie Gyllenhaal’s highly anticipated gothic romance film The Bride! is set to premiere on HBO Max on May 22, followed by its linear HBO debut on May 23 at 8 pm ET. The film, a fresh reimagining of the classic Frankenstein tale, features Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale in the lead roles.
According to Deadline, an American Sign Language (ASL) version of the movie will also be available on HBO Max, expanding accessibility for viewers.
Released by Warner Bros. on February 26, The Bride! presents a dark and unconventional love story set against the backdrop of 1930s Chicago. The story centers on “a lonely Frank (Bale) traveling to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him.”
The official synopsis further explains, “The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born,” as quoted by Deadline. However, the creation of the mysterious Bride sparks a chain of unexpected and chaotic events.
“What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!” the synopsis states.
Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal from her own original script, the film blends horror, romance and social rebellion into a visually striking cinematic experience. The project has already generated significant buzz for its unique interpretation of Mary Shelley’s iconic Frankenstein mythology and for bringing together an acclaimed ensemble cast.
Alongside Buckley, Bale and Annette Bening, the film also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Penelope Cruz in key roles. The production team includes Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman Keren as producers, while Carla Raji, David Webb and Courtney Kivowitz serve as executive producers.
With its star-studded cast, gothic atmosphere and bold storytelling, The Bride! is expected to attract both horror enthusiasts and fans of unconventional romantic dramas when it arrives on HBO Max later this month.
