Mel Brooks Returns to Hyperspace with ‘Spaceballs: The New One’ After 4 Decade

Date:

The galaxy of parody is officially expanding once again, as Amazon MGM Studios revealed the long-awaited return of one of comedy’s most beloved sci-fi spoofs. Unveiled at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the sequel to the cult classic Spaceballs now has an official title—Spaceballs: The New One—and a theatrical release date set for April 23, 2027, igniting excitement among fans decades after the original first hit screens.

The announcement arrived via a pre-taped video featuring franchise creator Mel Brooks, who returns both as producer and star. True to form, Brooks infused the reveal with humor, joking he couldn’t attend the event in person because he was “seeing Phish at the Sphere,” before unveiling the film’s cheeky title.

The presentation leaned fully into the franchise’s comedic roots. Rick Moranis, reprising his iconic role as Dark Helmet, made a standout appearance—marking a rare on-screen moment after years away from acting. His segment was playfully disrupted multiple times by co-stars Josh Gad and Keke Palmer through a series of pre-taped gags, keeping the tone light and irreverent.

Director Josh Greenbaum, who took the stage alongside cast members Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Josh Gad, and Lewis Pullman, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it the “honor of a lifetime” to follow what he described as a “comedic masterpiece.” The cast continued the spirited banter, with Bill Pullman joking he was excited to work with “someone I’ve seen blossom into a very special young man … Of course, I’m talking about Josh Gad.”

Lewis Pullman also joined in, poking fun at his own casting story: “It was a pretty rigorous process, took years. First, I was born.” Meanwhile, Zuniga humorously listed her conditions for returning, saying she would do so if offered perks like a “giant trailer, massive per diem, personal driver, Michelin-star chef, walk-in closet for [her] luggage.”

In another pre-taped moment, Moranis’ Dark Helmet declared his ambitions: “to steal the air from Druidia and to open wide domestically on 4800 screens.”

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the sequel has been jokingly described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Preview footage reportedly included Brooks in Yoda makeup and even a parody crossover featuring a Na’vi figure, promising a fresh yet nostalgic comedic ride.
