Paid Penalty Despite Balance, Actor Ashwin Mushran Warns of FASTag Scam

Date:

Digital toll payments through FASTag have streamlined highway travel across India, reducing wait times and eliminating the need for cash transactions. However, a recent incident shared by actor Ashwin Mushran has raised questions about possible discrepancies in the system and the need for greater vigilance among users.

Mushran described his experience while driving across Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, where a toll booth operator allegedly informed him that the FASTag linked to the vehicle did not have sufficient balance. Despite maintaining that adequate funds were available, he was asked to pay a penalty fee of ₹200.

What initially appeared to be a routine issue soon turned questionable. Upon later checking the account, Mushran found that the FASTag balance was close to ₹3,000 at the time of the transaction. This contradiction prompted him to investigate further.

Interestingly, during his return journey through the same toll plaza, the vehicle reportedly passed without any issues related to FASTag balance. After presenting proof of sufficient funds and escalating the matter to toll authorities, the penalty amount was eventually refunded.

While the exact cause of the incident remains unclear—whether it was a technical glitch, human error, or something more systemic—the episode has resonated with many motorists online. Several users reported encountering similar situations, suggesting that such incidents may not be isolated.

This case highlights an important takeaway: even small discrepancies can add up when multiplied across thousands of vehicles. For drivers, staying informed and cautious is key to avoiding unnecessary charges.

What Drivers Can Do

Motorists can take a few simple precautions to protect themselves from potential FASTag-related issues:

  • Check your FASTag balance before starting your journey
  • Keep a screenshot or record of your balance as proof
  • Don’t rush to pay penalties without verifying the claim
  • Request a manual check if a discrepancy is reported
  • Raise the issue immediately with toll supervisors if needed

As India continues to rely heavily on digital infrastructure for transportation, ensuring accountability and awareness at every touchpoint becomes essential. Mushran’s experience serves as a timely reminder: convenience should not come at the cost of vigilance.
