Riz Ahmed Finds Personal Connection in Bold New Hamlet Adaptation

Date:

Riz Ahmed is breathing new life into one of literature’s most iconic characters, stepping into the role of Hamlet with a deeply personal perspective that reframes the centuries-old tragedy for today’s world. In a bold modern adaptation set in multicultural London, Ahmed draws on his own experiences of feeling like an outsider to connect with the troubled Danish prince in a way that feels both intimate and timely.

The 43-year-old British actor and rapper has opened up about his emotional connection to Hamlet, revealing how the character resonated with him long before he took on the role. “I had a really inspirational English teacher who gave it to me,” Ahmed told People, recalling how he discovered the play. “I found a character, the heart of this play, that just feels as much of an outsider as I did at that time… and as much of an outsider as I think many of us feel right now.”

Directed by Aneil Karia and written by Michael Lesslie, the film reimagines Shakespeare’s classic in a contemporary setting, bringing the story into present-day London. One of its most striking moments sees Ahmed delivering the legendary “To be or not to be” soliloquy while driving at high speed on a highway—an inventive blend of classical text and modern visuals.

Ahmed acknowledged that Shakespeare’s works can sometimes feel distant to modern audiences. “It doesn’t belong to me and I don’t belong in it and it’s just a bit stuffy and alien.” He stressed, however, that storytelling has the power to bridge that gap, describing film as “an empathy engine” that allows viewers to see themselves reflected in stories across time.

Also serving as a producer, Ahmed emphasized the importance of recontextualizing classic works. “In order to keep this canonical, British text alive… we have to pass the baton in terms of where it’s set. Only then can it actually feel grounded and real,” according to People.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 and is set to release in theaters on April 10. The cast includes Morfydd Clark, Joe Alwyn, Sheeba Chaddha, Avijit Dutt, Art Malik, and Timothy Spall.

With its contemporary lens and emotional core, this new Hamlet aims to make Shakespeare resonate with a whole new generation.
