Will Smith is set to headline the upcoming action-thriller Supermax, directed by David Gordon Green, following a major acquisition deal by Amazon MGM Studios from Miramax.
According to Deadline, the film follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside what is described as the world’s most secure prison. Smith will portray one of the lead investigators, while casting is currently underway for the female FBI agent who will star opposite him.
Amazon MGM Studios reportedly secured worldwide rights to the project in a deal valued at approximately USD 70 million. The studio is expected to develop the film primarily as a streaming release rather than for traditional theatrical distribution.
Production on the thriller is scheduled to begin in mid-August.
The screenplay has been written by David Weil and David J Rosen, who are known for their work on the television series Hunters and Invasion. Both writers will also serve as executive producers on the project.
Production responsibilities will be handled by The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman. Smith and Adam Fishbach will produce the movie through Smith’s Westbrook banner.
Green, best known for directing several films in the Halloween franchise, is expected to make the biggest-budget film of his career with Supermax. He most recently directed episodes of the Amazon television series Scarpetta.
Several Miramax executives are also attached as executive producers, including CEO Jonathan Glickman and President of Film Alexandra Loewy.
Meanwhile, Will is also attached to write Extraction 3 starring Chris Hemsworth for Netflix.
